PT Weda Bay Nickel employs approximately 16,400 workers at the mine, all of whom are Indonesian nationals, with 68% hailing from North Maluku.
The Weda Bay Nickel deposit is considered one of the largest in the world, distinguished by its substantial size and the high average nickel content of its ore. Based on the criteria set by the independent organization JORC, the estimated exploitable reserves amount to 2.8 million wet metric tonnes.
PT Weda Bay Nickel operates as a joint-venture collaboration involving China’s Tsingshan Holding Group as the majority stakeholder, the French mining and metallurgy company Eramet, and PT Antam, an Indonesian State-Owned Enterprise.
In 2020, PT Weda Bay Nickel commenced operations of a nickel ore smelting plant utilizing pyrometallurgical/RKEF technology, capable of producing 30,000 tonnes of nickel annually.
Situated within the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) alongside other facilities, this smelter employs 2,500 workers.
Under a partnership agreement established in 2017, Eramet oversees PT Weda Bay Nickel’s operations, focusing on implementing mining and ESG best practices in collaboration with Tsingshan, which manages the metallurgical activities and infrastructure development.
PT Weda Bay Nickel obtained an AMDAL (Indonesian environmental permit) in 2009 from the North Maluku Provincial Government, encompassing mining and smelting operations. This was later upgraded to an Environmental Permit issued by the Ministry of Environment in 2014.
Conducting environmental and social studies with local and international partners, PT Weda Bay Nickel is dedicated to environmental sustainability through the implementation of environmental policies, management plans, monitoring strategies, and impact mitigation measures. The company adheres to globally recognized mining practices such as tailings storage, water management, and land restoration to ensure a safe, responsible, and sustainable mining sector.
PT Weda Bay Nickel is committed to supporting the Indonesian government in promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices. Its shareholders are implementing the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) standard at the Weda Bay mining operations.
