PT Weda Bay Nickel is dedicated to upholding Indonesian and international standards in terms of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.
Our teams have always sought to ensure that our operations are in strict compliance with all relevant regulations, particularly those which apply to the social and environmental aspects of the project. Our activities to date have been conducted in full compliance with Indonesian regulations. We operate under the AMDAL from 2009, which has been approved by Provincial Government of North Maluku. In 2014, the AMDAL has been upgraded into Environment Permit issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment. Whenever PT WBN initiates a new phase of its mining activities, it updates the AMDAL and seeks approbation from local authorities, following consultations with local communities. Our action plans, which encompass safety and energy efficiency, are regularly being monitored and improved.
IRMA Standards
The shareholders of PT Weda Bay Nickel have chosen to participate in the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) by agreeing to undergo an audit of their mining site conducted by external independent experts.
IRMA represents the most rigorous ESG & CSR standard currently available for the mining industry. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving more than 50 members, such as purchasers, labour unions, non-governmental organizations, affected communities, investors, mining firms, and financial entities.
With the backing of Eramet, PT Weda Bay Nickel has established a dedicated IRMA team, and the entire organization has united in support of these initiatives. Consequently, PT Weda Bay Nickel is gearing up to undergo an audit by IRMA’s external auditors focusing on environmental, social, and societal aspects after having concluded all assessment preparation in 2025. To align with IRMA standards, an initial self-assessment has been conducted in 2023. PT WBN is fully mobilized to meet that standard with their stakeholders.
CSR Roadmap
From the initial stages of exploration, PT Weda Bay Nickel has consistently fostered open communication with the local communities and governing bodies, which are crucial to maintaining its social license to operate. Building upon these robust community relationships, a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility Roadmap has been devised.
