Weda, July 17, 2026 — PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN) continues to strengthen its environmental management efforts through the implementation of reclamation and revegetation activities across its operational mine-disturbed areas. These initiatives form part of the company’s sustainable approach to ensuring that every stage of its operations is carried out in parallel with the restoration of environmental functions. WBN remains committed to advancing these strategic measures to minimize the environmental impact of its operations on surrounding ecosystems and communities.
According to the latest reclamation report as of March 2026, Weda Bay Nickel has successfully reclaimed 223.43 hectares of land as part of its efforts to restore the ecological functions of its mining operational areas. The reclaimed areas are located across several sites within WBN’s operational concession, including Kao Rahai, Biri-Biri, and Tofu.
Meanwhile, revegetation activities are being carried out progressively in accordance with the reclamation plan approved by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and in compliance with applicable regulations. These efforts are further supported by Weda Bay Nickel’s 2.02-hectare nursery facility, which enables the company to propagate and cultivate a wide variety of plant species required for post-mining revegetation across reclaimed areas.
The reclamation process includes landform recontouring, the planting of various vegetation species, and ongoing monitoring of plant growth to ensure that ecosystem recovery progresses effectively.
Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment at Weda Bay Nickel, Ronggour Siahaan, stated that reclamation is an integral part of the company’s operational lifecycle.
“We integrate environmental management into every stage of our operations, from planning and implementation to monitoring and the rehabilitation of mined-out areas. Various initiatives involving our employees and business partners further reinforce this culture, helping ensure that environmental responsibility is consistently embedded in our day-to-day activities,” said Ronggour.
This commitment is reflected in a range of initiatives involving employees and business partners. In June 2026, WBN planted 1,000 tree seedlings across three operational areas—Kao Rahai, Biri-Biri, and Tofu.
In addition, WBN organized a Clean Up Day in June 2026 across several employee and contractor residential areas. During the initiative, participants cleaned the surrounding environment and sorted waste by category to help foster more responsible waste management practices.
In collaboration with its contractors, Weda Bay Nickel also promotes the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle by repurposing unused materials as part of its circular economy initiatives. Materials such as scrap metal and used drums are converted into creative and functional products, including miniature heavy equipment replicas and furniture.
All of these activities form part of Weda Bay Nickel’s internal initiative, “Weda Today, Earth Tomorrow,” launched in conjunction with World Environment Day 2026. “Through this initiative, we reaffirm our commitment to embedding environmental stewardship not only across our operational areas, but also in our daily activities. Going forward, we will continue to strengthen collaboration with our employees and business partners to support more responsible mining practices and further minimize our environmental footprint on surrounding communities and ecosystems,” said Ronggour.
